Does your lack of energy make it hard to get through the day? The following simple tips will see your energy levels soar overnight. Better still, they're healthy, cheap and easy to implement.

1) Eat breakfast!
It's become something of a clich among health experts, but breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Getting into the habit of eating a healthy, nutritious breakfast like oatmeal, wholewheat toast or a banana in the morning will give you a slow release of energy through the day.

2) Drink more water!
Incredible though it may seem, we spend much of our days dehydrated, which can lead to a lack of energy. Sip plenty of water throughout the day to help maintain and improve your energy levels.

 3) Ditch sugary treats!
If your blood sugar level drops, your energy levels will go with it. Eschew sugary treats and caffeine-heavy drinks, and instead eat a snack that contains protein and low-burning carbohydrates, such as a banana or a handful of almonds.

 4) Eat a smaller lunch!
Watch your lunchtime calories. Most of us are familiar with the dreaded mid-afternoon slump. To help ensure you avoid suffering from it in the future, consume no more than 500 calories at lunchtime. The reason? The bigger the meal, the longer it takes to digest, and the more energy that uses up.

5) Avoid trans fats!
It's been well publicised in recent years how damaging for health trans fats can be. However, you should still be careful to avoid them where you can for another reason - trans-fat heavy foods can narrow the blood vessels which will block the path of energy-rich blood cells.

6) Get enough sleep!
It sounds obvious, but if you're not getting enough sleep, your energy levels won't be where they need to be throughout the day. Aim for at least eight hours a night, and, if you have trouble sleeping, avoid eating a big meal right before you go to bed, and avoid caffeine for several hours before you turn in for the night.

7) Eat lots of vegetables!
Colourful vegetables like tomatoes and carrots are among the best foods around for boosting your energy. Get into the habit of eating plenty of veg with every main meal.
